Press Release

Boise City/Ada County Housing Authority to Close Waiting Lists for Low Income Housing Programs

    The Boise City/Ada County Authority

      Boise, Idaho April 27, 2011:

Boise City/Ada County Housing Authority to Close Waiting Lists

Due to budget cuts at the federal level, the Boise City/Ada County Housing Authority (BC/ACHA) is announcing the closure of its waiting list for general programs (Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, Shoreline Plaza and Low Rent Public Housing).  The only waiting list remaining open will be Supportive Housing which provides rental assistance and supportive services for special needs populations referred through homeless shelters, El Ada Community Action Partnership and Terry Riley Health Services.

Executive Director Deanna Watson stated:  “We regret having to take this action when the need for our services has never been higher, but are forced by our economic reality to make some very difficult decisions.  Our waiting list now has over 5,500 families.  Our programs currently assists 1,900 families a month with their rent.  With cuts to funding, the estimated wait time for those in need has now breached the 5 year mark and will only grow as additional cuts come our way.”
The waiting lists will officially close Friday April 29, 2011 at 4:30 p.m.

The budget cut affects the administration fees paid to the agency for delivering housing assistance and covering operating expenses of the programs.  Watson stated, “With the reduction in funding, the agency must reorganize its methods for delivering services.  Lay-offs, reductions in office hours open to the public and other internal cost savings measures will be implemented.  Everything is on the table at this point.”

The Boise City/Ada County Housing Authority has played a key role in addressing the affordable housing needs of low and moderate income residents in Ada County since 1967.  State statutes establish housing authorities as quasi-governmental entities authorized to perform essential government functions.  In all of the communities in Ada County, BC/ACHA is the authorized entity for delivering a number of federally and bond funded housing programs for the purpose of serving the affordable housing needs of the residents of Boise, Garden City, Eagle, Star, Meridian and Kuna.  The service area holds a population of over 350,000 people and covers 1,054 miles.
